How to Make the Most of Your Motorcycle Road Trip

Planning out a motorcycle road trip before heading out may not sound as appealing as being behind the handlebars, but it can spell the difference between a great trip and one that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons. A road trip on your motorcycle is a different beast than traveling in your family car. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you make the most of your motorcycle road trip.

Check the Forecast

Getting caught in a rainstorm is enough to ruin a motorcycle trip, especially if you’re not dressed for the occasion. Always check the forecast to ensure that you’re planning a trip during a time of moderate, clear weather so you can travel safely and comfortably.

Plan Your Destination and Route

Many bikers prefer to select a destination in advance, as opposed to riding just for the sake of riding. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the journey to your destination. Take a look at some maps so you can select a route that takes you through the scenic areas and landmarks you wish to see. Some bikers enjoy taking one route to their destination and a different route back home to see as much along the way as possible. a motorcycle parked in front of a mirror

Carefully Select Your Riding Companions

The best riding companions are those who have two main qualities. Riding with buddies who share your level of enthusiasm makes for great travel because it creates a group of people who are sharing their passion together. Additionally, choosing companions with riding skills similar to your own is helpful as well, so no one gets left behind or feels held back.

Consider the Size of Your Group

Riding with a buddy or two is a very different kind of trip than riding in a larger motorcycle group. For instance, it’s easier for small groups to stay together, while large groups can be easily separated at lights and turns. The key to riding with a large group is to plan the trip well, including the route, the stoplights you expect to pass, rest stop locations and more. Also, be sure everyone has the entire group’s contact information in case you’re forced to split up.

Prepare Your Bike

As with any vehicle, you should have your motorcycle inspected by a mechanic before leaving on a big trip. Top off the fluids, change the oil, inflate the tires and perform any other necessary tasks to ensure the safest ride possible. Additionally, call your independent insurance agent to double check that your motorcycle insurance policy is up to date and contains an adequate amount of coverage.
